About Indigenous Baskets by Sergio J Matos

One of Sergio’s passions is fulfilled through his active involvement and work with several indigenous communities along the Amazon River.

Because he was born near a “Xingu” indigenous reserve, surrounded by the forest beauty and natural diversity, he learned from a very young age to admire the natural fibers which are abundant in this area.

This particular collection was developed alongside the community of Barcelos, using Piassava and Buriti fibers derived from native Palm trees. The fibers are soaked in mud for four days to achieve the basket’s deep organic color.

This ongoing project empowers women from the ethnic groups of TarianoTukanoBaniwaBaréArapaçoWerequena, and Tuyuca. It helps them rescue their cultural heritage and infuse a new life in their creations.

Due to the handmade nature of these baskets, no two pieces are exactly alike, and the color varies slightly between each individual piece.
