Lina Armchair

The work of Lina Bo Bardi, with her husband Pietro Maria Bardi, guided the new partnership between designer Paulo Alves and the furniture industry “Empório das Chairs”. A unique personality, Lina liked to be called an “architect”. Her academic training, fundamentally erudite, took place at the Faculty of Architecture in Rome, one of the most renowned in Europe.

She worked alongside Gio Ponti in Milan, at which time she contributed to several architecture and art magazines. Together with her husband, a renowned art critic, she arrived in Brazil in 1946 to take refuge from the war. There, she felt the freedom to  reinvent herself far from the worries of a battered Europe.

She found strength in the Brazilian popular canvas and was able to add her modern cachet to the Brazilian culture to great success. She admired spontaneous architecture, everyday art and the objects that were part of it.
